ADVERBS OF PLACE: SPANISH GRAMMAR A1

ADVERBS OF PLACE or in Spanish ADVERBIOS DE LUGAR are used to show the position or location of one thing, person or place with another. It answers the question ¿Dónde? (where?).

Adverbs of place in Spanish

List of adverbs of place in Spanish

Encima de /sobre (over)

El ratón está encima del queso (the mouse over the cheese).

El ratón está sobre el queso (the mouse over the cheese).

Debajo de (under)

Hay algo debajo de la piedra (there is something under the stone).

Detrás de (behind)

El hombre está detrás de la bola (the man behind the ball).

Delante de (in front of)

El gato está delante de la silla (the cat is in front of the chair).

Enfrente de (opposite)

Los hombres están uno enfrente del otro (The men are facing each other).

Dentro de (in, inside)

El pez está dentro de la pecera (the fish is in the fish tank).

Fuera de (out, ouside)

El pez está fuera del agua (the fish is out of water).

Al lado de / junto a (next to)

Los ratones están al lado del queso (Mice are next to/beside the cheese).

Los ratones están junto al queso (Mice are next/beside the cheese).

Cerca de (close/nearby)

El pájaro está muy cerca del hombre (The bird is very close to man).

Lejos de (far/far away)

El hombre busca algo que está lejos de él (the man is looking for something that is far away).

Entre (between/among)

La mesita está entre las lámparas (The little table is between the lamps).

* notice that «entre» is not followed by the preposition «de».

A la derecha de (on the right)

La oficina de correos está a la derecha de la panadería (the post office is on the right of the bakery).

A la izquierda de  (on the left)

La panadería está a la izquierda de la oficina de correos (the bakery is on the left of the post office).
